The Astrid Uganda Foundation was established in the memory of Astrid Joosten from Milheeze. During her last visit to Uganda and the Green Valley School in Bwera in June 2008 she committed herself to helping the children of this school. The (orphaned) children are living in appalling conditions. The school is lacking everything.
But during this holiday Astrid became the first European tourist ever to be infected with the deadly Marburg virus of which she died on 11 July 2008. Therefore her husband Jaap Taal initiated the establishment of a foundation in memory of Astrid to improve the poor conditions of these children.
"Children of Uganda going to school together for a better future", that’s what the Astrid Uganda Foundation is about. The unique approach of the foundation works. People in the community itself, as well as competent local partners, play a central role. Self-reliance, sustainability and transparency are three main pillars that carry our projects.
